Susan Sarandon Bio
It was a few days after the 1968 Democratic convention and there was an audition for a movie that featured several roles for young people who had disrupted the convention. Joe (1970) was selected for auditions in New York by two recent Catholic University graduates. Chris Sarandon, an actor who had been trained for the role, was ostracized. Susan, his wife Susan was given the coveted part as Susan Compton who was the daughter of Bill Compton (Dennis Patrick). In the film Dad Bill kills Susan's drug dealer partner and then makes friends with Joe (Peter Boyle)-- the bigot who is working on an assembly line , and who collects guns.Five years after, Sarandon made the film which cult classic fans have come to know her as Janet who is entangled with transvestite Dr. Frank n Furter in The The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975). Sarandon fought for Annie in Bull Durham (1988) more than 15 years following her first appearance in the film. She took a flight on her own from Rome and Italy from Italy to Los Angeles. "It was a fantastic script... It was able to do away with a lot mythsand challenged American definitions of success," she said. "I went to the studio together with Kevin Costner and shook hands with some of his sexy assistants before getting back on the plane. Tim Robbins (1988), her Bull Durham supporting actor, had already produced two sons by the year 1992 that allowed Sarandon into a position where she was able to leave her home and be able to take on more difficult roles. The result was four Academy Award nominations in the 1990s and for the best actress in Dead Man Walking (1995). Louis Malle's Atlantic City (1980), was her first Academy Award nomination.
